Dasyurus viverrinus, the eastern quoll is a medium-sized carnivorous marsupial that was once found across much of south-eastern Australia but has been extinct on the mainland since the 1960’s and is only found in Tasmania, where it lives in a wide range of habitats. They are solitary, reclusive, nocturnal creatures that hunt at night for insects and small vertebrates and spend the day resting in dens in underground burrows, fallen logs or piles of rocks. Live in territories and ward off intruders by hissing, coughing, shrieking and becoming aggressive.
During the late Autumn mating season, the male searches for multiple females to mate with. As a marsupial the female has a pouch where she feeds between five and eight pups per litter. After nine weeks they outgrow the pouch and are left in a den while she finds food. Quolls are classified as endangered. Their survival is threatened by feral cats, foxes, timber harvesting and clearing native vegetation. Have become a symbol of the fragility of ecosystems, the importance of conservation and the need to protect vulnerable species.
