Viola hederacea, the Australian, Native or Ivy-leaved Violet is a small, hardy, low growing, evergreen, perennial groundcover found in a variety of shady, moist areas in south-eastern Australia, from Queensland down into Victoria and across to the Adelaide Hills and Tasmania. It grows 5-15cm high and 30-45cm wide, has beautiful, bright green kidney shaped, ivy-like leaves with a wavy-edge and produces small, charming white flowers with mauve centres, mainly in the Spring and Summer. The leaf cover provides habitat for invertebrates, small reptiles and frogs and the prolific flowers are a significant food source for various insects.
The young Native Violet leaves and flowers are edible and were traditionally used as a food source and for medicinal purposes. The flowers have a delightful, mild taste and can be used to add colour and fragrance to salads or desserts. The leaves have a mucilaginous quality with a faint watermelon–peppery taste and the seed pods can be pickled and eaten like capers. The plant has anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, cleansing and soothing qualities and can be used for a wide range of medicinal purposes. Seen as a symbol of modesty, humility, faithfulness, love, positivity, optimism, remembrance, spiritual wisdom and exploring new options.
