Caladenia fuscata, the Dusky Fingers Orchid is a small, terrestrial orchid found in the open eucalypt forests, woodlands and coastal scrub of eastern Queensland, NSW, Victoria, south-eastern SA and Tasmania. Has a single slender leaf about 15cm long and produces a spike with a single, delicate white to dusky pink flower in September and October, followed by a seed capsule. They can be found in large dense colonies and attract insect pollinators like native bees, flies and wasps.

Dusky Fingers is often confused with other pink orchids especially Caladenia carnea, the Pink Fingers Orchid and they hybridise quite easily which can make identification difficult. The Caladenia orchids are survivors from Gondwana that haven’t changed much since then. Their tubers can survive underground and the seeds, which are dependent on the presence of special mycorrhiza fungi in the soil for germination, can remain dormant for many years. They are currently vulnerable to drought and land clearing.

Care Instructions: Do not wear swimming or bathing.
