Leptospermum laevigatum, the Coast or Coastal Tea Tree is a large, evergreen bushy shrub or multi-stemmed tree 1.5m to 6m high found in the coastal dunes, heath and dry sclerophyll forests from south-eastern Queensland through to south-eastern SA and northern Tasmania. It is a hardy, fast growing plant that tolerates strong winds, salt, drought and light frost. Has a twisted, gnarled trunk, rough, textured, grey coloured bark, small, oval shaped, greyish green leathery leaves and produces masses of small, dainty white flowers from late Winter to early Summer.
The fragrant flowers attract nectar feeding birds, insects, bees and butterflies. They are followed by small, woody fruits containing seeds which remain unopened until the plant dies, is burned or severely drought affected. Has been extensively used for coastal plantings and is now regarded as an invasive weed in WA.
Coastal Tea Tree has antiseptic, antibacterial and antiviral qualities and was traditionally used for a range of medicinal purposes. It is now being made into an essential oil which has a sweet, earthy aroma with light woody, citrus tones that is considered more pleasant than traditional Tea Tree oil made from the Melaleuca alternifolia plant. A symbol of resilience, the ability to thrive in challenging circumstances and used to enhance concentration and focus, reduce stress or anxiety, clear emotional and energetic blockages and protect from negative energies.
