Waxlip Orchid Earrings.

Made in Australia from our original hand painted design, these earrings are printed with eco-friendly inks, onto light weight sustainably grown hoop pine and finished with silver stainless steel hoops, perfect for sensitive ears!

Glossodia major, the Waxlip orchid is a common, widespread terrestrial orchid found in the dry open eucalyptus forest, woodland and coastal heath of south-east Queensland, eastern NSW, ACT, Victoria, south-east SA and Tasmania. It likes full sun to dappled shade, poor, well-drained sandy or loamy soils and is often found growing in large, visually striking colonies. 

Has a single dark green, hairy leaf about 50mm long and a thin, wiry stalk about 30cm tall that bears 1-2 large, exquisite mauve to purple, lightly scented flowers with a white centre, from August to November. The unique shape and colour of the waxy lip, along with the fragrant nectar, attract pollinators like native bees and wasps. After pollination it produces seed, disperses them, dies back and goes dormant in underground corms. These enable it to survive periods of drought or fire and then reshoot. It is currently vulnerable to habitat destruction and disturbance.
