Trichoglossus moluccanus, Rainbow lorikeets are slender medium-sized parrots common along the east coast from northern Queensland to South Australia, in rainforests, coastal bush, woodlands and treed urban areas. They are colourful, active, playful, social birds known for their noisy screeching and chattering calls. Usually seen in fast-flying pairs or flocks of up to 50 birds, that can become 1000 or more. They are strong, swift flyers travelling up to 30 km between feeding and roosting sites. Very active in the early morning and late afternoon, roosting in large groups in treetops at dusk.
Unlike most parrots, they don’t eat seeds and primarily feed on pollen, nectar, some fruit and insects. Have specialised brush-tipped tongues to extract the flower nectar, which plays an important role in pollinating native plants. They form life-long monogamous pairs, prepare a nest together in the hollow of a tall tree, palm trunk or overhanging rock. The female incubates the eggs and they both feed the young and aggressively defend their nesting area. Seen as a symbol of playfulness, humour, hope, renewal, liberation, individuality, self-expression and pursuing what nourishes you.
