Actinotus helianthin known as the flannel flower and sukikh in the Dharawal language is a small hardy shrub that mainly grows in the sandy coastal heathlands of eastern NSW and Victoria. It has distinctive silvery grey-green foliage, covered in soft flannel like hair and produces velvety, creamy-white daisy shaped flowers in spring and summer.
The flannel flower was the original floral emblem for NSW and is now the national symbol of The Mental Health Council of Australia. Indigenous people use the plant for a range of anti-inflammatory and antiseptic purposes. It symbolises healing, renewal, resilience and the ability to adapt to change. It’s also associated with sensitivity, gentleness and expressing feelings.
